School Finance for Independent School
The Finance for Independent Schools course is designed specifically for bursars, finance officers, finance assistants and other staff involved in financial management within independent schools.
It provides a comprehensive understanding of the finance function, its key processes and the particular financial considerations of the independent sector. Participants will learn the core principles of accounting and financial control while exploring areas particularly relevant to independent schools, including school fees, VAT, bursaries and scholarships, fee debtors, cash-flow forecasting, reserves and financial reporting.
This course is suitable for staff at all levels — whether new to independent-school finance, joining a school from another financial environment, or experienced staff looking for a practical refresher. It may also be useful for bursars, governors and trustees who want a broader understanding of their school's financial management and controls.
Independent schools operate in a very different financial environment from maintained schools and academies. Income may come primarily from school fees, boarding, extras, lettings, donations and other activities, while the school's legal structure can affect its accounting, governance and reporting responsibilities.
Finance staff need to understand not only the day-to-day accounting processes, but also the implications of VAT on school fees, fee collection and debtors, financial controls, cash-flow management, reserves and longer-term financial sustainability. Where applicable, they may also need to understand charity accounting and trustee responsibilities.
The course provides practical guidance using realistic independent-school examples, while retaining the core accounting principles and financial controls required in any well-managed finance department.
The course consists of 10 x 20–30 minute sessions, followed by practical exercises to consolidate learning. Each session includes downloadable course notes, a video presentation and practical activities, helping participants develop the confidence and skills to apply their knowledge in an independent-school environment.
